Liberation of the town

​On 3rd March 1945, the town was conquered by the 24th rifle division of the Red Army but German troops managed to push it out from the town while it was being replaced by Czechoslovak troops. It was only the new attack of 4th April 1945 that enabled soldiers of the 4th Czechoslovak brigade enter the town. Two Soviet regiments were pursuing the enemies through Iľanovo, Ploštín and Demänová, which were independent villages at that time. The central Liptov region was seriously devastated by fights. Liptovský Mikuláš was in ruins. Houses and flats were completely destroyed, so were roads, bridges and rails, many families lost their homes... Ammunition that remained in the town also after the war made the situation even worse...
