Metamorphosis Fountain

With the names of famous natives, Metamorphosis Fountain is the most photographed place in the pedestrian zone. The place of honour belongs to the inventor, Professor Aurel Stodola, who was considerably respected by Albert Einstein himself. „When I take my pen in my hand to write a few words about Professor Stodola, the master of technology, a gentle yet firm man, I feel that my expressive abilities are too limited to treat such a person the way he deserves. ”Albert Einstein read more
A monumental work of art „A Tribute to Creative Thinking“ dominates the fountain. Blocks with rotating mirror surfaces symbolize the constant transformation and movement, the infinity of the passage of time, thoughts, ideas and new changes, as well as the imaginary turbine blades of a modern machine. It was the turbines, the new scientific discipline at that time, to which the scientist and visionary Aurel Stodola dedicated his life. At the age of 81, he received the greatest honour a technician can receive - he was awarded the James Watt International Gold Medal, similar to the Nobel Prize in Technology. Today, his name is immortalized in the dark granite of the static block of the fountain. The second block bears the names of seventy Mikuláš´s natives, who are permanently inscribed in the history of the city - scientists, artists, writers, priests, doctors, teachers, ... The area around the fountain is a popular resting place with many cafés and patisseries.
You can find out more about Aurel Stodola's personality in the Professor Stodola's Office exhibition in the Janko Kráľ Museum or at the website www.aurelstodola.sk
