Liptovská Mara
The Liptovská Mara dam is a sought-after summer recreation destination. The natural beach swimming pool located on its southern shore, right next to a campsite, is particularly popular. It is only 7 km away from the town of Liptovský Mikuláš and is easily accessible by car, bus or bicycle. Besides bathing and various water sports, the pool provides great opportunities for sport fishermen to pursue their hobby and it is also a starting point of sightseeing boat tours. Above the west shore of the dam, there is the Úložisko hill where you can find Havránok – a place once inhabited by Celts and now shrouded in legends. The archaeological museum explores their presence in the region. South of the water dam, the village of Svätý Kríž boasts the biggest articular church in Central Europe. It originally stood in the village of Paludza which was flooded during the construction of the Liptovská Mara dam.
It was built in the years from 1965 to 1975 as a pumped storage hydropower plant to prevent flooding and produce electricity. Its average annual production is 134,5 Gwh and it is the largest water dam in Slovakia by volume. Its construction required the flooding of 13 villages. The village of Liptovská Mara, which gave the dam its name, was one of them. The church tower protruding from water close to the dam bank is what has left of the village. You can find the replica of the church as well as the replicas of other sights of folk architecture that once stood in the flooded area in the Museum of Liptov Village in Pribylina.
2. Natural beach swimming pool next to ATC Liptovský Trnovec campsite
It includes a resting area spreading over 1 km2 and a swimming area of 0,7 km2 marked by buoys. There are lifeguards, food and drink kiosks and sanitary facilities. For the current water temperature, please visit the website of Slovak Hydro-meteorological Institute.
The beach pool is open daily in the summer season from 9 AM – 7 PM.
MARAFUN – water attractions
Experience the fun as you pedal a water bike, paddle a kayak, ride a water scooter or take a motorboat ride. You can also try wakesurfing and flyboarding, when you are propelled high up in the air above the water, or you can decide to experience the thrill of a doughnut tube ride and feel every bump and curve. The attractions for kids include mini moto boats, aquazorbing, bouncing inflatables and trampolines.

Explore all the corners of the Liptovská Mara dam from the deck of the sightseeing boats. The regular circular trips start from the port at the beach pool. The boat trips starting from the Dechtáre port are available upon request.
It has a fleet of two 12-seater catamarans – open motor boats that are both comfortable and luxurious. Besides regular hourly trips, you can rent a boat with a captain or book a boat ride with swimming or tasting Liptov specialities.

4. Fishing
Liptovská Mara provides quality fishing for a wide variety of fish including carps, chubs, nases as well as predatory fish like perches, pikes, toothpicks and catfish. Fishing is allowed only with a state fishing ticket, which you can purchase at the INFORMATION CENTRE of the Liptovský Mikuláš town, and a guest fishing permit available at the addresses listed below. You also need to follow the local fishing code of conduct.

Úložisko is a hill rising above the Liptovská Mara dam and also a place where mystic Celts settled 2000 years ago. They brought new technological innovations to Liptov - they knew how to process ore, used iron tools and the potter´s wheel and they even minted their own silver and bronze coins here. The reconstructed dwellings, shrine with a ritual complex and sacrificial pits will give you a unique insight into their way of life. There is also a medieval wooden castle in Havránok.

6. Articular church in Svätý Kríž
Only five wooden articular churches have been preserved in Slovakia to this day. The biggest one of them, which is at the same time the biggest one in Central Europe, is located behind the village of Svätý Kríž. The church can seat as many as 6000 people. It was built by master carpenter Lang without any construction projects because he could not read or write and he relied solely on his experience. The church has a floor plan in the shape of a cross, original furnishings, baroque altar and pulpit, Venetian glass chandelier and wall paintings. It used to stand in the Paludza village, which was flooded during the construction of the Liptovská Mara dam. In order to preserve this unique sight, it was dismantled and moved to the village of Svätý Kríž, where it was rebuilt over the course of several years.
