The charming town of Liptovský Hrádok is only 10 kilometres away from the Liptovský Mikuláš town. It is accessible by car, bus and train. The symbol of the town is a castle with a lake. The Skalka viewpoint, located close to the castle, offers panoramic views of the castle, the Liptovský Hrádok town and the surrounding mountains. Another attractions of the town are the Ethnographic Museum and the Hrádocké Arboretum dating back to 1886. It is located in the middle of the town and is perfect for pleasant walks and relax. The open-air Museum of the Liptov village in Pribylina, a sight that is definitely worth visiting, is only a 10 km drive from Liptovský Hrádok towards the High Tatras. The museum is also accessible by public transportation (Pribylina, Račianska valley Bus stop).

1. Castle in Liptovský Hrádok

At the confluence of the Váh and Belá rivers, Count Donč had a stone castle surrounded by a moat built at the beginning of the 14th century. The lake in front of the castle is the remains of the moat. The castle often changed owners. It was under a noblewoman Magdaléna Zai (1561-1629) that a renaissance manor house was added to the castle and the castle achieved its most mature form. Come and see yourself why this place captivated the former chatelaine. In 2001, the castle and the manor house was bought by a private owner. Visitors call her “a modern-day chatelaine” as it was thanks to her that, after four centuries of dilapidation, new life has been breathed into the second largest cultural sight of the Žilina district. Today, the manor houses a historic boutique hotel called the Chateau Grand Castle hotel and the Magdalena Zai Restaurant, which is renowned for gourmet cuisine. During the summer there are regular guided tours available to the public. For booking the tour off season, please contact the castle by phone or e-mail.

3. Museum of the liptov village in Pribylina

The construction of the Liptovská Mara dam caused the inundation of 13 villages. The most valuable architectural sights were moved to a picturesque environment under the Western Tatras. This marked the establishment of a village where a visitor can get a perfect idea of how a typical Liptov village used to look like in the past.  There are houses of farmers and craftsmen, farm buildings, a school, a mill, a fire station, a bell tower, a pillory, a church and even a manor house. The manor house originally stood in the village of Parížovce and is one of the oldest preserved aristocratic residences in the Liptov region. The Church of the Virgin Mary, which originally stood in the village of Liptovká Mara, had been the seat of church administration in Liptov since the High Middle Ages. Ján Literát from Madočany, the most famous forger of royal documents in Liptov, was burned in the vicinity of the church.  The church has rare wall paintings, the oldest of which were created around 1320. One of the main attractions of the museum is a ride on a historic train running on a forest narrow-gauge railway.
To make sure you get in, make a seat reservation online in advance.  A recreation area with a nature trail suitable for people with special needs is the part of the museum. It is barrier-free and there is a number of navigational aids including curbs, guide ropes and Braille information boards.
