Head west from Liptovský Mikuláš and you will soon discover another attractions of the Liptov region. There are two water parks where you can relax in thermal spring pools – Bešeňová water park (17 km away from Liptovský Mikuláš) and Lúčky Aqua-Vital Park (22 km away from Liptovský Mikuláš). History enthusiasts will enjoy the area as well. Among the greatest historical attractions in Liptov are a submontane village called Vlkolínec, a UNESCO classified site located 34 km away from Liptovský Mikuláš, and the Likava castle above the village of Likavka, which is 30 km far from Liptovský Mikuláš. The town of Ružomberok is also interesting to visit. The Church of St. Ondrej, the historic town hall and the staircase connecting the Square of A. Hlinka, the central square of Ružomberk, with other parts of the town centre form the characteristic silhouette of the town.

1. Water park Bešeňová

The Bešeňová water park is based on hot healing water springs that rise as deep as 1,987 metres and have the temperature of 60.5°C. They have beneficial effects on the musculoskeletal and breathing system and mental health. The water park is sought after by all age groups. The older ones prefer mainly relaxation in geothermal pools, younger visitors like water attractions and the local wave pool. 9 indoor and outdoor thermal and freshwater pools plus 7 water slides are open all year round. 2. AQUA - VITAL PARK & SPA LÚČKY

It is located in the beautiful environment of the Choč mountains. There is an outdoor recreational pool with many water attractions, an outdoor sitting pool with healing mineral water at a temperature of around 36 - 38°C, an indoor mineral pool, a vital world with different kinds of saunas, a wellness centre with a salt cave and therapeutic procedures. The Aquavital Park is easily accessible by car and bus – Lúčky-kúpele bus stop.

3. Vlkolínec (UNESCO)

Vlkolínec is a fairy tale village nestled under the Sidorovo hill with colourful wooden houses, a brick church, a timber bell tower, a well, a gurgling brooklet, sweet smelling meadows and woods. The village is inhabited but you can visit the Roľnícky dom (peasant house) and a small local farm with the exposition showing the traditional way of life in Vlkolínec, the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, the UNESCO house, the shepherd´s hut with many traditional artefacts and the Folk Art Gallery. Vlkolínec is located 11 kilometres from Ružomberok and is accessible by car or bus from Ružomberok. If you take the bus, you need to get off in the village of Biely Potok and then walk the Trlenská valley for about 50 minutes.

4. Likava castle

Although the castle is a ruin now, it is one of the highest castles in Slovakia. It was a noble castle built by Donč, the Count of Zvolen, before 1341 to guard an important trade route.  In the period from the 14th to the 17th century the castle withstood several sieges until 1707 when František II. Rákoczi ordered its demolition. The castle was the seat of the nobles administering the towns and villages of the lower Liptov and the major part of the central Liptov. Today, two courtyards of the lower castle and the Huniady tower, where you can find an exposition dedicated to the castle's history, is open to the public.
The village of Likavka is accessible by car or bus (Likavka, hrad bus stop). From the Koliba Likava restaurant follow the red tourist mark to the Likava castle. The route takes about 20 minutes.
