The Mikuláš´s Jews - online town tour

How did they actually live and what did they leave behind? An intricate fates of educated and talented Jews with business spirit, who significantly influenced the development of the town.

A sightseeing tour of the captivating destinies of personalities of an important community, which co-created the town´s history for more than two centuries.
The first Jewish families came to Mikuláš around 1720. From where did they come and who invited them? And how did the Jews help the town´s economic prosperity? Where did their educated and prospective members assert themselves? The continuity of viable generations was broken by World War II and the Holocaust. At that time, even ordinary people became heroes. Like the evangelical priest Vladimír Kuna, who saved 26 Jewish children. And what about Jewish student Margita Schwalb, who was rescuing people right in the concentration camp? How did the future of the Jewish community develop?

It represents the largest collection of works by an excellent graphic artist, a native of Liptovský Mikuláš Koloman Sokol, whose work was also appreciated by Pablo Picasso. More info

The most curiosities from the rich almost 740-year history of Liptovský Mikuláš. More info

Jánošík´s Torture Chamber and Courtroom

The Janko Kráľ Museum hides one of the cruellest courts in the history of the town, where the brigand captain Juraj Jánošík was interrogated and convicted in 1713. More info

Metamorphosis Fountain

With the names of famous natives, Metamorphosis Fountain is the most photographed place in the pedestrian zone. The place of honour belongs to the inventor, Professor Aurel Stodola, who was considerably respected by Albert Einstein himself. More info

County hall

In the largest building in the middle of the square, there housed the County Administration Centre, once also the County Court and Prison. Its facade is decorated with a relief of the coat-of-arms of the Liptov County, the staircase is illuminated by beautiful stained glass windows designed by Ester Šimerová-Martinčeková. More info

Synagogue

One of the largest and most stylish in Slovakia, the synagogue excels at its richly decorated Art Nouveau interior. More info

Liptov Gallery of P. M. Bohúň

The third oldest gallery in Slovakia has the largest exhibition hall among Slovak galleries and manages more than 5.300 works. More info

Our Mother Statue

Created by Alojz Štróbl, a native of the Liptov region and a leading figure in Hungarian sculpture, the statue is registered in the Louvre, Paris as a work belonging to the most perfect sculptures in the world. Its bronze casting is exhibited in front of the Liptov Gallery of P. M. Bohúň. More info

Lutheran Church

With a capacity of 1 700 seats, it is one of the largest lutheran churches in Slovakia. More info

Slovak Museum of Nature Protection and Speleology

The only museum of its kind in Slovakia with interactive expositions „Karst and Caves of Slovakia“ and „Protected Nature of Slovakia” with its parts „Earth a Place to Live“and „Man, Mountains, NATURA 2000“. More info
